Sutherland is collecting food for the Food Bank! Please bring in canned food to drop in the large cans outside each grade level wing. We will be collecting food until March 4. Remember that Spirit Week is coming up! Here is the schedule: Monday : Crazy Hair Day Tuesday : Jersey Day Wednesday : Hippie Day Thursday : Black Out Day There will be a pep rally on that Thursday, the 30th. Remember that Friday is off!

I wondered why the basketball was getting bigger. Then it hit me. Did you hear about the guy whose whole left side was cut off? He's all right now. I wasn't originally going to get a brain transplant, but then I changed my mind. What do you call a bald monster? A lock-less monster.

Two goldfish were in their tank. One said, "You man the guns, I’ll drive!"  A horse walks into a bar, the bartender says, “Why the long face?”  How many days of the week start with the letter “t”? Two. What are they? Today and tomorrow! A rich man drives by a homeless man eating grass, the rich man pulls over and says to the homeless man, “Excuse me sir, but what are you doing?” “Well,” says the homeless man, “I lost my job a couple months ago, and my family and I, we lost everything we own, so now all we can do to survive is eat grass.” So the rich man says, “Hey why don’t you come over to my house for dinner.” “That’s really generous,” the homeless man said, “But I have a family to-” “No I insist!” the rich man said. So they all get in his car, and while they're driving down the road, the rich man says, “You’ll love it there, my grass is like a foot long!”

Friday, October 7th, we had a spirit day! People wore shirts with content of their favorite subject.  Here are some photos of teachers and students showing spirit.

Q. Why did the boy eat his homework? A. Because his teacher said it was a piece of cake! Q. Why did the teacher wear sunglasses to school? A. Because her students were so bright! Q. How do you know that carrots are good for your eyesight? A. Have you ever seen a rabbit wearing glasses?

We are having a Chompetition from now until next Friday. Please remember to bring in box tops! Whichever Chomp brings in the most wins a prize! Hey Sharks! Today Sutherland had an ICA Day! Here are some pictures of just a few of the available activities: A Sutherland Robotics team improved their robot. There is nothing like a game of Super Smash Bros to end a day. A game of soccer for some friendly competition. 

Q: Why is tennis such a loud game? A: Because each player raises a racket. Q: Who says sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me? A: A guy who has never been hit with a dictionary. Q: What kind of bait do librarians bring on fishing trips? A: Book worms!

The student council is having its second meeting of the year! They hope to make your experience at Sutherland more fun! Please keep in mind that there is an upcoming Chompetition. We are going to start collecting box tops soon! Make it a great day or not, Sutherland. The choice is yours!

Students in Erin Percival's science class explored air density and heat by inflating a solar balloon. For about ten minutes, Sutherland Middle School had it's very own aircraft just like the larger hot air balloons that fly around Charlottesville.

So many teachers at Sutherland shaved some pretty sweet mustaches for today's event!! Some dyed their hair...and all want to raise money for the HeadStrong Foundation!!! Good Luck in the tournament!

Two weeks ago, Sutherland celebrated its 20th Anniversary with a luncheon for the current and former principals of the school, and teachers that have been here since the beginning!  They had a nice lunch and talked about all the changes that have gone on since 1994 when the school opened! There is a picture floating around out there and we will try to find it asap! The Cornhole tournament was a complete success with two 8th graders winning the championship belts and TONS of money raised for a great cause. The day before Thanksgiving break, Mr. B's and Ms. Smoak's class hosted a DELIGHTFUL and DELICIOUS feast for all that were able to attend. Guests were greeted at the door by students and asked to write what they were thankful for on a leaf and put it on the Thankful Tree. The meal was scrumptious! Well done guys!

Teachers and students are all gearing up for a HUGE Corn Hole tournament on Friday afternoon! All of the money raised will go to childhood cancer research through the Head Strong Foundation. Male teachers have grown beards and awesome 'staches and will shave them into super creative shapes if monetary goals are met. Female teachers have agreed to color their hair BEAUTIFUL with many awesome colors if such goals are met. We had our first spirit day today and it was awesome! Each grade level dressed in a different color to show team spirit! Grades rotated from tug of war, to the amazing Omnikin game in the gym and then outside to the blacktop where students could choose from any number of games and activities or just to hang out with their friends!  We have had an amazing start to the school year!!!  Go Sharks!
